Statement
„carry out a coup d'etat against his own nation”
Claim checked: Prime Minister Donald Tusk is carrying out a coup d'etat.
Verdict: Unverifiable
What we found
This is a political and legal assessment, not a claim that can be checked like a fact. A "coup d'etat" means an unlawful seizure of state power. The confirmed facts are: seven judges elected by the Sejm entered the Tribunal escorted by the State Protection Service, judge Korwin-Piotrowska announced a break in duties for the president and vice-president of the court, and police blocked the president from entering (Notes from Poland, Parkiet). The legal basis for the suspension is disputed: the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights called it doubtful (WP) and Marcin Matczak called it nonexistent (Notes from Poland), while the Prime Minister describes his actions as restoring the rule of law. In the sources we checked we found no information on the Sejm, the government or the president being removed from power: the dispute is about the leadership of the Tribunal. Whether the actions were lawful can only be decided by a competent court or body.
Method note
We rate only what can be checked: the facts of the events and the state of the legal dispute. The label "coup" itself is an assessment, so we propose "Unverifiable" rather than "False" or "True".
